2017 wasn’t an easy year. I was plagued from start to finish with some pretty serious medical issues and, only now, am I finally getting better. That said, I questioned my ability to even exist in this space and ended up missing my deadline for Dark Matter. It really tore me up. I wanted to have the collection of short stories finished and on shelves by the winter of 2017.
The year wasn’t entirely a mess though. I mean, as the title of this post implies, I did manage to snag a pretty rad award!
When I found out that Emotive was a finalist for the best in indie fiction category, I joked that I’d use the trophy, if I won, to go on a murder spree. Fast forward six months later and here it is! Don’t worry, I won’t use it to kill anyone… for now, but wow, is the base of this thing heavy! I think it might be solid marble!
I don’t really feel like I personally won an award, nor do I feel like I deserve to claim as such; rather, this trophy of madness goes to Linus, Emotive’s main character. He is the embodiment of many different animal friends that I’ve known over the years, and Emotive was dedicated solely in their/his honor.
With Dark Matter on the horizon, the timing of this award couldn’t be better. Dark Matter is dedicated to all of the horror junkies out there, and landing a Fear Award feels like a formal indoctrination into the culture that I love so.
Cheers to Anthony Pernicka, iHorror.com, and the Fear Awards team as a whole for believing in this as much, if not even more than, I do.
An extra special thanks to everyone that has read and enjoyed Emotive.
Stay tuned, we are only getting started.
